Low Tox Life - My Notes on a Book

There is no need to move to the country, become an organic farmer and make all your own products to live a low tox life. Low Tox Life by Alexx Stuart shows us how to incorporate positive changes while still living a regular life in our current society. It is an empowering book that makes you realize that as individuals we can make an impact on the planet and our own health with simple daily choices.

I have been an avid listener to Alexx Stuart’s insightful podcast, Low Tox Life for a few years now. It is one of my favourites. I keep coming back to it week after week to learn from the experts Stuart chats with about creating a healthier body, family, home and planet. Now Stuart has a book, Low Tox Life. It is a great introduction for anyone who wants to reduce their exposure to harmful toxins while improving the health of the planet.

Stuart is optimistic and empowering despite covering big, scary topics. She inspires the reader to make positive changes for health and the planet while hitting us with science and hard facts. Stuart provides easy and doable strategies for making changes including, how to ditch plastics, eating real food, becoming an ethical shopper and creating a healthy home.

Stuart emphasizes the need for us to stop being brainwashed by the clever marketing by big business. They have us so well convinced that we need and deserve convenience at all costs but we do not. She provides a very convincing argument for why it is very inconvenient for us to be blind consumers. It is inconvenient for our health, for our family’s wellbeing and for a happy planet.

Stuart is the first to admit that the transition to a more health-conscious and sustainable lifestyle does come with its challenges. But with the knowledge of why you are making the changes, this shift can be a lot of fun. There is ample motivation for why we should all live a more low tox life outlined within this book. Plenty of ways for the reader to begin this journey are included. She is realistic and helps the reader to not get overwhelmed in this process of change. It is a journey. Small changes here. Simple product swaps there. Ditching several unnecessary items altogether. Little things add up over time and make it super manageable.

Stuart begins the book by telling her personal journey into the world of low tox. She provides the reader with a convincing argument for why it is high time we all make some positive changes for a healthier us and planet.

The book is broken down into four main areas: body, home, food and mind to help the reader become an educated consumer and reduce their toxic burden. The reader will learn about what nasty ingredients to look for in beauty products, how to become a stealthy shopper, and ways to keep dangerous chemicals out of the home. For DIYers, Stuart includes simple recipes for creating low tox cleaning and personal care products.

After reading this book you may find that you have a lot fewer cleaning products in your cupboard (who knew you only really needed a couple of cleaning products to clean the whole house?). You'll likely find yourself scrutinizing the ingredients listed on the back of your shampoo bottle (or maybe switching to a shampoo bar). There is also the risk that you might just get obsessed with living more low tox and want to share the knowledge with anyone who will listen – at least that is what has happened for me. Pass the book on to a friend! It is a lot more fun to make these changes with others.
