Ditch Synthetic Fragrances for Health and Maternal Wellbeing

Did you know that your mood, energy, and overall maternal wellbeing may be affected by the cleaning products you use—or even your perfume? The products you choose can either enhance your health or become another big obstacle on your path to vibrancy.

Many manmade chemicals can increase susceptibility to depression, headaches, asthma, skin irritation, autoimmune diseases, foggy brain, cancer, developmental disorders, and fertility problems. Some are even linked to weight gain and difficulty losing weight, earning the nickname “obesigens.” Many are considered endocrine disruptors, which can disrupt hormones, and others are classified as likely carcinogens. These chemical exposures can also contribute to postpartum fatigue and affect postnatal recovery, especially for new and overwhelmed mothers.

Luckily, there is so much we can do to freshen the air we breathe while indoors, without relying on plug-ins or harsh room sprays.

Buy Better, Buy Less

Most of the time, we don’t need an endless array of perfumes, shampoos, and cleaning products. Swap synthetic perfumes for essential oil-based alternatives. Replace the cabinet full of harsh cleaning products with just two or three options that don’t contain artificial scents. Over time, as your personal care products run out, transition to healthier versions. Start by reading ingredient lists, and soon you’ll have your favourite low-tox products that are convenient and effective.

For those who enjoy a subtle scent at home, essential oil diffusers are a gentle alternative. Beeswax candles are also a safer option than fragranced candles, which can contain harmful chemicals.

DIY Is an Option, But Don’t Burn Out

If you enjoy it, making your own cleaning products, face oils, or soaps can reduce chemical exposure. But be gentle with yourself. Perfection isn’t required. In my early years as a mom, trying to do everything perfectly became a stressor in itself. Now, I balance making products when inspired with relying on a few trusted, high-quality brands.

Prioritizing your own health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Even small shifts in your habits can create a safer, calmer environment for you and your children. For more ideas on tiny changes that make a big difference in everyday life, check out this guide on micro-shifts and small choices.

Freshen the Air Naturally

Opening windows is one of the simplest ways to improve indoor air quality and it’s free! Airing out bedding, dusting, and vacuuming regularly also helps.

Plants are another natural solution. Any plant can improve air quality, and some, like those highlighted in NASA studies, are particularly effective. I recommend low-maintenance, robust plants suited to your region. Choose ones that can withstand minimal care and the attention of little ones.

Beyond physical benefits, plants create a calm, inspiring atmosphere. They add serenity to your home, helping both you and your children feel more relaxed. A peaceful environment is especially important for thriving motherhood and supporting your postpartum health.

By making small, intentional choices about your products and home environment, you are modelling healthy habits for your children and showing other moms that prioritizing wellbeing is both possible and empowering.
