Thriving Priorities for Moms: Self-Care and Postpartum Focus
Your priorities are the areas of your life that are most important to you. They are the relationships, habits, and activities that bring you the most meaning, and the ones you want to invest your time and energy into. Priorities guide how you want to spend your time and with whom.
In this article, we’ll briefly explore what areas of your life are currently your priorities, with a focus on family and relationships, helping you to nurture maternal wellbeing and manage postpartum fatigue.
What Are Priorities and Why Do They Matter?
The options for priorities are endless. Some examples include spending time with family, caring for your health, engaging in self-care, connecting with friends, enjoying nature, meaningful work or volunteering, sleeping, preparing healthy meals, and fostering financial independence.
Our lives are busy and can quickly fill with tasks and activities that don’t align with what truly matters. Being deliberate about what to say “yes” and “no” to allows us to make decisions based on our priorities, creating a more fulfilling life.

Questions to Clarify Your Priorities
Family & Relationships
Visualize your relationships with your partner, children, and other loved ones. Who are the people you choose to surround yourself with? For new moms, these connections are especially important—they can provide support, encouragement, and practical help during postpartum recovery. Focusing on these relationships is key for thriving motherhood and reducing new mom burnout. Even small moments of connection, like reading to your baby or sharing a cup of tea with a partner, can make a meaningful difference in your wellbeing.
Meaningful Work
Consider how you spend your time outside family life. If a traditional career isn’t part of your current postpartum life, think about volunteering, hobbies, learning, or creative projects that bring purpose and joy. Even small, manageable activities, like a short craft, journaling, or contributing to a community project, can help restore a sense of identity beyond motherhood. What does your ideal workday or meaningful engagement look like? How can you weave these moments into your life while caring for your baby?
